Friendship vs duty essays In Mark Twain's novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the author often has Huck decide between friendship and duty. The dilemma is a result of the friendships he makes being often times controversial. His moral fiber urges him to drop his friends, while his friends are sometimes undeserving to be dropped. Huck’s first controversial friend is the runaway slave, Jim. Jim looks after Huck and cares for him In the Time of the Butterflies Analysis - eNotes than his own father does. He often provides food, protection, and sometimes even helpful advice. Despite their closeness, Huck sometimes feels obligated to turn Jim in. Even though they provide an income for Huck, Jim, and themselves, Huck thinks that there is something not right about them. He watches and sometimes even helps them swindle people out of their money, but he feels some what obligated to stick around instead of ditching them. Huck finally gives into his duty to bust the criminals when they steal money from some of his other friends, the innocent Wilks sisters. His friendship with the sisters, whom he recently met, is far more stronger and pure than his friendship with the thieves. He finally decides to take action after he realizes, “[the Titanic | Royal Museums Greenwich | UNESCO World Heritage all jest laid theirselves out to make me feel at home and know I was amongst friends”(chapter 26). Friends or not, Huck correctly obeys his call to duty to not let the criminals get away with their crime. He decides that his friendship with the sisters is way better than h.
